[歌手介紹] J Rawls (Columbus, Ohio)

Jason Rawls (aka J Rawls)，是來自俄亥俄州的Columbus的producer兼MC，也是underground hip hop的傳奇之一。J Rawls 參與過許多專輯的製作，包含 Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Masta Ace, El Da Sensei, Masta Ace, The Beastie Boys, All Natural, Wordsworth, Jonell, us3, Venus Malone..以及其他許多歌手。

J Rawls 自幼成長於Columbus的Eldorn Drive，從三歲起因為父親的影響，而開始對音樂產生了濃厚的興趣。隨著年紀增長，J Rawls 的唱片收藏也越來越多，當他進入 University of Cincinnati 就讀時，就決定利用自己的唱片收藏來鑽研sampling技巧以及音樂製作。

九零年代初期，J Rawls與另外兩位來自同鄉的友人Buka、Duane一同組成了"Dope Beat Specialists"，當時J Rawls的藝名叫做Dynomite、在團體裡負責饒舌和beat box。Ohio離嘻哈重鎮紐約還有一大段距離，在當時，當地藝人想要與紐約嘻哈大廠簽下唱片合約的機率，就有如在買樂透一般渺小，但是J Rawls當初也沒有想這麼多，一切的出發點都是由於對音樂的熱愛。J Rawls曾經如此回憶：

"We did it because we loved it. We did it because it made us feel a certain way and there was nothing like hearing your voice on tape."

在大學的這段期間，J Rawls結識了許多貴人，例如 Jermaine Sanders (aka J-Sands )，當時兩人都就讀於同一所大學，兩人結為莫逆之交，在1996年組成了團體"Lone Catalysts"，並且在2000年發行首張專輯"Hip Hop"，2002年推出"The Catalysts Files"、2005年"Good Music"，以及其他一些透過地下獨立廠牌的專輯

"At the time, we thought that there weren't many cats, at least in our area, trying to do it the way we were trying to do it. It's that raw hip-hop." 

此外，J Rawls在大學時也結識了饒舌團體 MOOD, The Five Deez, 以及 Hi-Tek 等人。透過MOOD、Hi-Tek的人脈，某次機緣巧合之下，他們引薦 J Rawls 給 Talib Kweli (當時在Rawkus Records)、並且參與製作 Black Star 的首張同名專輯，貢獻 "Brown Skin Lady" 和 "Yo Yeah" 兩首作品。Black Star 專輯推出之後得到了極高的評價，"Brown Skin Lady"這首作品也是專輯中令人矚目的焦點之一，這張專輯的成功，不但捧紅了 Mos Def 與 Talib Kweli 兩人，也讓 J Rawls 的名字從 Ohio underground hip hop 走出去、成為他音樂生涯中的轉捩點。

Talib Kweli在歌詞裡唱道： "We're not dealin' with the European standard of beauty tonight/Turn off the TV and put the magazine away/In the mirror tell me what you see/See the evidence of divine presence."

2001年，J Rawls 透過Groove Attack Records推出了首張個人專輯"The Essence of J Rawls"，整張專輯由自己製作編曲、饒舌演唱 (這張專輯當時還有被台灣的馬雅音樂代理過，翻譯成"傑羅斯-嘻哈精髓")。除此之外，大學時期的好友 Fat Jon (Five Deez 的團員) 也與 J Rawls 組成了另一個雙人團體"3582"，在2001年發行團體專輯"The Living Soul"以及2003年"Situational Ethics"，對 underground、Jazz hip hop 樂迷來說都是經典上乘之作。

 之後幾年 J Rawls 發片非常頻繁，除了3582、Lone Catalysts之外，還發行過許多個人專輯，像是備受樂迷愛戴的"Liquid Crystal Project"系列，目前已經出到第三集。J Rawls也與其它許多歌手一起推出合作專輯，例如2007年與Declaime合作的"It's the Dank & Jammy Show"、2009年與John Robinson合作的The 1960's Jazz Revolution Again"、2012年與Hieroglyphics的Casual推出的"Respect Game or Expect Flames"等等。

多年來，J Rawls已經是Ohio最具代表性的音樂人之一，自己也建立獨立廠牌"Polar Entertainment"，致力于發掘當地饒舌新人、並且讓Ohio hip hop發揚光大，2012年，他替當地的新人P. Blackk製作整張專輯"Contemporary Nostalgia"，此外也自己簽下一些當地歌手，像是Jeán P & LAKIM、DJ Bombay、Opposite Attracts等人。

今年夏季，J Rawls 預計推出生涯最後一張個人專輯"Legacy"，並且宣告未來不會再使用J Rawls的名義獨自發片 (但還是會繼續推出合作專輯或是幕後製作)。有趣的是在這張專輯裡，J Rawls只負責饒舌部分、作曲則全部交由其他製作人操刀，旨意在回到當初音樂生涯的原點、用MC的身份來替自己畫上一個句點。
