[專題] The Legacy of a Young King: Nipsey Hussle

(CNN) Rapper Nipsey Hussle died Sunday after a shooting in Los Angeles near a clothing store he owned, according to a high-ranking law enforcement official with the Los Angeles Police Department. 

自始至終，Nipsey Hussle出生在街頭，也橫死在街頭。從谷底達到人生的頂點，卻又黯然終止。
半睡半醒之間看到這則令人難過的新聞，到現在依舊是難以置信。希望用這篇文章以及音樂，緬懷一下這位伴我度過求學階段時無數掙扎日子的饒舌歌手。

Nipsey Hussle原名Ermias Davidson Asghedom，出生於1985年8月15號，父親來自東非的Eritrean、母親是非裔美籍。

Nipsey來自洛杉磯South Central地區的Crenshaw Blvd & Slauson Ave一帶。這個地區由惡名昭彰的Rollin' 60's Neighborhood Crips所統治，而Nipsey Hussle也是他們的成員之一。(有人說Nipsey是Snoop Dogg的cousin、甚至還有人說是Snoop的兒子，不過這點無法證實)

Nipsey能夠得到 "Hussle" 這個綽號是其來有自。早在13歲的時候他就開始在錄音室學習製作音樂，並且時常到Watts Towers Studio去精進他的錄音專業知識，但是這純真的童年沒有維持多久，他就被迫面臨了抉擇：
“When I came into my manhood and I had to make real decisions,” 
“That’s when I fell real heavily into the bangin’ and the hustlin’ and the streets, and was doin’ everything under the sun. That’s when I said, ‘Forget the music.’" 
大意就是他在成年時，面臨的抉擇是要上街頭幹壞事討生活、亦或是做音樂。

在街上Nipsey爭取了自己的名聲，成為了ghetto celebrity，還在South Central開了自己的服飾店。不過Nipsey最後沒有選擇完全放棄音樂。在當時Nipsey孤注一擲，他不知道自己會不會成功，決意把手頭上的資產全部變賣，從車子、輪框到價值$20K的珠寶，他把這些東西全都拋售並且投資設立自己的studio。

初試啼聲

Nipsey的音樂生涯始於2005年，他發表了首張mixtape "Slauson Boy Volume 1"，並且隨後成立了Slauson Boy Records，不過並沒有引起太大的注意，音樂方面也是略顯粗製濫造(個人覺得不太好聽XD)。

2008年，Nipsey Hussle一口氣發表了兩張作品"Bullets Ain't Got No Name, Vol. 1"以及 "Bullets Ain't Got No Name, Vol. 2"，由在當地頗有人氣的DJ Skee、Felli Fell主持。

儘管在電台和街頭其他管道上努力宣傳音樂，也獲得許多表演邀約(包誇了著名的House of Blues)，Nipsey仍舊不願妥協。他一直都過著crips的街頭生活:
“It was like, I kept going back,” 他回憶起 “I would go to the studio for a couple of months and then I’d go back to the streets.” 

 而可以預期地，Nipsey也因此惹上了不少麻煩，甚至在一次警方搜索中被沒收了所有的錄音器材。
不過Nipsey依舊接二連三地推出了單曲，像是"They Roll"和"Bullets Ain't Got No Name"同名單曲都找來了西岸巨星The Game抬轎。"Bullets Ain’t Got No Name"更獲得了著名的DJ Felli Fell的賞識，在他的電台節目裡強力播送，並且簽下Slauson Boyz，使他在西岸開始嶄露頭角。這些單曲後來都收錄在2008年的mixtape "Bullets Ain't Got No Name, Vol. 1" 和 "Bullets Ain't Got No Name, Vol. 2"當中。

2007年，Felli從中幫忙，讓Nipsey的經紀人Big U和主流大廠Cinematic/Koch/Epic Records的執行長Jonny Shipes牽線 (這傢伙之後還發掘了Big K.R.I.T.和Smoke DZA)，順利簽下了一紙唱片合約。

過了沒多久，Slauson Boy一夥人興高采烈的飛到牙買加的Ocho Rios大肆慶祝，過了兩個禮拜回來的時候才發現警察搜索了他的服飾店，並且宣稱他違反了緩刑條例。
“I went from havin’ a fat advance check and ridin’ jet ski’s in Jamaica, to sittin’ in the county jail on a shoe program 24 hours a day,” 他回憶起 
“So it kinda put everything in perspective once again and had me sittin’ with my thoughts and myself to see exactly what I wanted to do with myself.”

Nipsey突然間地成功、獲得了這唱片肥約，讓執法人員更加盯緊他，同時也使他成為了貧民窟許多年輕人的希望。Nipsey最終被撤銷了所有指控，並且在2008年二月被釋放出獄。出獄後的Nipsey又重新投入音樂事業。

信心滿滿的Nipsey，在2009年推出了第一支正式出道單曲"Hussle In The House"。

 而"Bullet Ain't Got No Name"混音帶系列也開始引起大家的注意，讓他得以和一些主流市場的饒舌明星合作，例如與Drake合作的"Killer"、在Snoop Dogg專輯"Malice n Wonderland"當中合作"Upside Down"一曲。此外，同年也發行了mixtape第三章 "Bullets Ain't Got No Name, Vol. 3"。

這一連串的舉動，再加上媒體、雜誌的大幅報導、眾多西岸大咖的力挺，都使得Nipsey Hussle成為西岸逐漸嶄露頭角的新星。

Nipsey原本打算趁勝追擊，要在2010年十月(最早消息指出是在2009年)推出首張個人專輯"South Central State of Mind"，預計找來The Game、Snoop Dogg、Kokane、Letoya Williams和Nipsey自己的Slauson Boyz等人跨刀助陣。另外還有Scott Storch、Play-N-Skillz、Terrace Martin、1500 or Nothin'這些重量級製作團隊操刀。當時，Nipsey解釋了這張專輯的概念: 
“The perspective from LA is from Snoop and Ice Cube and them,” Nipsey says. “Them dudes is grown. They did they stuff, but they out of that element now. They on some other s***. So it’s like people want to hear what’s going on in the streets [now] and that’s what I’m providing with this record.”  
(大意就是以前的前輩現在都在做芭樂歌，他想做一張足以反映出真實街頭生活的專輯)

 迫不及待大施拳腳的Nipsey，就連專輯的主打曲"Feelin' Myself"都已經拍攝好音樂錄影帶了。"Feelin' Myself"在當時曾引起過一陣話題，發布兩週後在YouTube上將近百萬點擊率(現在因不明原因被下架)，在各大電台、BET電視台上都有播送，不過銷售成績並不亮眼，美國告示牌排行榜Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs只拿下第93名。

而這張專輯在發售日前更是突然喊卡，據說是Nipsey本人自己要求的 (不過更可能的原因是與唱片公司的衝突所致)，留下錯愕的樂迷。雖然說是推遲，但這張專輯自始至終都沒有消息，從來沒有發表過，就此無疾而終。

除此之外，2010年Nipsey一起參與了"We Are the World 25 for Haiti" (一首為了海地大地震而做的慈善歌曲)，這首歌曲讓他被XXL雜誌評選為年度十大新人(Annual Freshman Top Ten)，LA Weekly也稱呼他為洛杉磯的下一位巨星(the next big L.A. MC)。

馬拉松

 在Epic Records的日子，除了交出一首銷售平平的"Feelin' Myself"單曲之外，沒有什麼其他暢銷的作品，而個人專輯更是延宕了兩年之久。看似大好的發展機會，結果交出了一張白卷。Nipsey曾在訪談中提到"Feelin' Myself"的製作過程：
“When I make records I do it from a creative standpoint, and then once the record’s done we look at it from a business standpoint.
The record, when we created it, it was intended to be a record that was a little lighthearted, was a little more aimed at the club, was a little more aimed at radio – obviously without stepping outside the context of my story.” (大意就是說這支單曲當時是要貼近主流市場口味，但最後仍無法達到預期的效果)

由於Epic Records適逢大改組(董事長Amanda Ghost被炒魷魚)，當時挖掘Nipsey的團隊也被撤換了大半，與新團隊理念不合的Nipsey在2010年底就選擇離開，回到地下音樂圈自己努力。

Nipsey選擇回到非主流的管道，自掏腰包創辦獨立廠牌All Money In Records (口號就是All Money In, No Money Out)，並在2010年12月21號宣布發行免費mixtape "The Marathon"，主打單曲"Keys to the City"。之所以叫做"馬拉松"，是因為Nipsey的座右銘就是hussle，在成功之前，就是要持續努力不懈：
“The Marathon is all about the work before the celebration, the test of endurance that separates the winners from the rest.”

 2011年，Nipsey被捲進了一起槍擊案。他在 Crenshaw和Slauson上的Shell加油站遇到了前經紀人Eugene “Big U” Henley，由於"South Central State of Mind"的無限期延遲搞得兩方撕破臉，Nipsey和Big U就在加油站發生了爭執，Nipsey的哥哥Samiel Asghedom甚至對空開了幾槍示威。(這起事件的更多細節可參考StreetGangs)

同年，Nipsey發行馬拉松計畫的續集："The Marathon Continues"，找來好友YG、Dom Kennedy跨刀。

 2012年，Nipsey和西岸當紅新人YG (來自Compton，也被選為2011年XXL最佳新人之一)合作"Bitches Ain't Shit", 這支單曲同時也找來Young Money的Tyga助陣，殺進排行榜Hot 100以及Heatseekers Songs chart的第十一名，表現亮眼。

 事實上他和YG的合作還挺頻繁的，兩人也是很好的朋友，一起合作過多支作品，例如"Motto Remix"、"#Grindmode"、"You Broke"...等等，都是當時非常火紅的單曲。此外Nipsey也在2012年發行了馬拉松系列的續作："The Marathon Continues: X-Tra Laps"。

 這段期間，Nipsey與Rick Ross也是合作密切，甚至傳出要加盟MMG的消息(不過最後沒有成真)。兩人合作過幾首作品，像是"Proud of That"、"Fountain of Youth"等等。

成功之路
Nipsey與女友Lauren London今年在GQ所拍攝的系列照片。取景於Marathon Store對面的Slauson Donuts

 2013年，Nipsey持續積極佈局。同年十月，Nipsey發表mixtape "Crenshaw" (由DJ Drama主持)，其中收錄了9th Wonder製作的"Face the World"、以及由1500 or Nothin'製作的"Blessings"。


"Crenshaw"採用的行銷模式非常有趣，在當時引起了軒然大波。Nipsey一方面讓這張mixtape開放完全免費下載，但令一方面又印製了1000張限量CD，發起"Proud2Pay"活動，將每張CD定價在一百元美金。

 每張專輯除了附贈親筆簽名之外，還包含了一張演唱會門票，於是死忠樂迷紛紛搶掏腰包，第一批CD在一天內就全數售罄，就連Jay-Z也對這種行銷手法大表讚嘆，一口氣買下了一百張CD。

 Nipsey靠著這次活動賺進超過十萬美元，而一張CD的成本只有75美分，在不考量其他成本之下的毛利就達到1300%，再加上當時所有主流媒體爭相報導，產生的效益極大，讓他名利雙收。

 這次的成功，也讓他在2014年底比照同一個模式發行了"Mailbox Money"。除了讓你免費下載之外，並且推出定價1000美金驚人數字的限量CD，購買CD的人還能到Nipsey的錄音室聆聽其他製作中的新歌。而這招的確相當管用，因為只要歌曲夠好聽，認同的歌迷就是會願意付錢。

人生終章 


 幾年下來的努力總算是沒有白費，在2017年底，Nipsey Hussle決定與Atlantic Records聯手，執行長Craig Kallman聲稱有了Nipsey的加入無疑是一種榮耀：
“Nipsey is not only an extraordinary MC but a true visionary and innovative entrepreneur. 
Over the past seven years, he has built an incredible brand that reflects his independent, non-traditional approach to what it means to be a creative artist in the modern music marketplace. We are thrilled and honored that he has chosen Atlantic as his label home.”
2018年，是Nipsey Hussle的事業最高峰。連續13年只發過mixtapes的Nipsey Hussle，終於選定Atlantic Records作為其事業的跳板，在二月16號發表睽違多年的首張個人專輯"Victory Lap" - 字面上的意思是賽跑選手在拿金牌後繞場一圈，這一圈叫做Victory lap，同時也意味著馬拉松mixtape系列的最終章，慶祝邁向勝利。

 專輯找來一線的全明星陣容，音樂錄影帶也以高質感、大成本的製作方式來宣傳，甚至還有微電影。有了大廠資源的挹注，再加上Nipsey本身的實力，讓這張專輯銷售量一路長紅，攻下告示牌排行榜第四名，更一舉拿下了61屆的葛萊美獎提名最佳饒舌專輯。

然而這一切，都在2019年3月31日寫下句點。Nipsy Hussle在自己的服飾店"Marathon Store"的店門前慘遭槍擊，送往醫院時不幸身亡，享年33歲。他在現場被開了六槍，而且還是在他女兒面前。目前嫌疑犯Eric Holder仍在逃逸中。
功成名就，卻依舊不忘本，Nipsey回到了自己熟悉的危險街頭，致力回饋自己的鄉里。因此Nipsey才能在洛杉磯當地得到如此多的愛，許多人認為他是真正的hometown hero，而他卻諷刺地死在自己的家，令人不勝唏噓。許多有錢人一飛黃騰達後是不可能這麼做的(例如Snoop和Dre老早就搬離原本出生的地方)。
“A lot of people who get rich don’t come back here,” Dontae Coleman, 28, who lives in the neighborhood, said. “He’s rare. A lot of people like him don’t come around often.”
苦熬十三年的Nipsey，從一名在街頭出生入死的rollin 60's瘸幫份子，一直到榮獲葛萊美獎提名、成為貨真價實的hood star，無疑寫下了在西岸的傳奇地位。

成功絕非偶然，必須要堅持信念、並且持續累積實力，否則即使給了機會也是無法好好掌握。
